The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education has extended heartfelt congratulations to the education sector for an impressive 87.3% pass rate achieved by the Class of 2024 in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. This significant milestone reflects not only the maturing education system but also the relentless dedication of learners, educators, parents, and all stakeholders committed to the future of South Africa’s children.
A Steady Climb to Excellence
The steady upward trend in the national pass rate is a testament to years of resilience, innovation, and effort. Notably, every province recorded an improvement in their pass rates, marking a collective stride toward excellence. “This achievement underscores the tireless effort and collaboration among all stakeholders,” said Ms. Joy Maimela, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education.
The Class of 2024 set a high benchmark, with all provinces achieving an average pass rate above 80%. This success lays a strong foundation for future cohorts to aim even higher.
Resilience Amidst Challenges
The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges to the 2024 cohort, disrupting traditional teaching and learning methods. Yet, their resilience and adaptability shone through. “The sector’s ability to rebound and perform exceptionally well after such adversity speaks volumes about its strength and potential,” Ms. Maimela added.
Nurturing Technical and Vocational Skills
Fostering Equity and Social JusticeThe committee commended the education system for its commitment to principles of access, equity, and inclusivity. Nearly 70% of the learners who wrote their NSC exams were beneficiaries of social grants, underscoring the need to enhance support for underprivileged communities. Furthermore, 47.8% of the matriculants achieved Bachelor’s degree passes, while over 319,000 distinctions were recorded, particularly in critical subjects like mathematics.
Support for Learners at Every Step
Progressed learners, who faced academic challenges, also made notable strides, with 54.7% passing their exams and over 4,000 securing Bachelor’s degree passes. The committee reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring every learner has the support they need to succeed.
Honoring Unsung Heroes
The committee paid tribute to the four markers who passed away during the marking of the 2024 examination scripts. “Their dedication to shaping the future of our children will never be forgotten,” said Ms. Maimela.
Addressing Cheating and Encouraging Perseverance
The committee expressed concern over incidents of cheating, with 407 cases reported during the exams. Efforts to educate learners on the consequences of dishonest practices will remain a priority. For those who didn’t pass, the message was clear: “Do not give up. Opportunities for improvement are available, and we encourage you to seize them,” Ms. Maimela urged.
Looking Ahead
As the new academic year begins, the committee calls on schools to prioritize teaching and learning from the very first day. Protecting instructional time will ensure syllabus coverage and continued improvement in learner outcomes.
Conclusion
The success of the 2024 cohort is a collective victory, built on the dedication and hard work of learners, educators, parents, and every stakeholder in the education sector. Together, South Africa can continue to build an education system that leaves no learner behind.
